I’m really happy for sites like FactCheck. Anything that condenses the endless amount of bullshit our society – not just the media anymore – dishes out is something I readily welcome, and politics is a swamp that desperately needs a guide.

That having been said, articles like this one make me weep for our future.

Really needing an article from you guys on this new proposed legislation H.R. 1388 (GIVE Act). I have been getting all kinds of e-mails from people claiming that bill calls for mandatory service and in violation of our 13th amendment , and that I should call my congressman and tell them that this bill is modern day slavery. I have also received e-mails saying that service would still be voluntary and that the bill is just expanding current volunteer opportunities. I have read portions of the bill that I could find and am unable to tell exactly what the bill is calling for (mandatory vs. volunteer service?). There is a lot of confusion out there right now regarding this very important legislation and was hoping you guys could shed some light.

No, really. Conservative websites actually have people believing that Congress is quietly trying to pass a bill that would make public service mandatory and that those who were serving would be banned from going to church. More over, they’re doing this in the information age, where any idiot with a computer and Internet access can expose the secret once and for all!

Sorry about that. While there are organizations that actually do outlaw you from taking part in anything religious or overly partisan, none of them are government-mandated. On the one hand, Congress really should outlaw going to church: there isn’t a religion on the face of the planet that stands up to any kind of scientific scrutiny. But then again, if people are willing to use their ability to think freely to do the exact opposite, who are we to judge? There won’t be public service today, but maybe there will be tomorrow! Who knows? In any case, you can be sure conservatives will expose the liberal agenda! Dun dun duuuuuuuuuun!
